“Until He Comes: Take Heart and Give Heed!”- II Pet. 2:1-22 Most like promises better than warnings, though both are essential. Promise: “A declaration, written or verbal, made by one person to another, which binds the person who makes it to do, or [not] to do, a specified act; that which causes hope, expectation, or assurance.” Warning: “Previous notice; caution against danger; admonition” (Webster’s Revised Unabridged Dictionary). We need both promises to give hope and warnings to caution us. God gives us both in His Word. 2012 Theme: “Until He Comes” - looking for Jesus to come and living according to that perspective. Until Jesus comes, we should take heart in God’s promises & give heed to His warnings! Both are equally sure. Both are expressions of God’s love. II Peter 2:1-22 - Primary teaching - 4 statements about false prophets/teachers (last week): I)There will always be false prophets/teachers, until Jesus comes. II)They will not escape God’s judgment. III)Their character is flawed. IV)They may appear to be redeemed, but are not and they will return to unbelief. 4 statements that warrant everyone’s attention - 1 promise, 3 warnings. I)God knows how to rescue the godly from trials - vs9a. God preserved Noah, rescued Lot. Sometimes God delivers us from trials & sometimes through trials; but He will rescue us. He will “make a way where there seems to be no way.” He will cover us - Psalm 91:4 (picture) Psalm 27:13-14 - “Wait” - “qavaw” - “wait, look for, hope, expect; collect, bind together” (Strong’s). Take hold of God, bind/weave His Word in your heart/mind, expect Him to be who He is & do what He has promised. Seek God’s glory in your trial and do what is right. II)God keeps the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment - vs9b. Vs1, 3 - “bringing upon themselves swift destruction…;” “Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.” It may seem that the unrighteous “get away with murder,” but God will bring justice, punish evil. The scales will be balanced! One’s judgment & punishment has either been put upon Christ on the cross, or it will be meted out when Jesus comes. There’s no escaping God’s judgment. III)Day of judgment is an undeniable reality - vs9b. “Destruction” (1, 3, 12), “Extinction” (6), “Utter darkness” (17) II Peter 3 - “The day of the Lord” - heavens and earth destroyed, “new heavens & a new earth in which righteousness dwells” Revelation 20:11-15 - All our names & deeds are in the Book of Deeds; only the redeemed have their names in the Book of Life. The only way to escape the day of God’s judgment is faith in Jesus Christ as the only way & Redeemer. By faith embrace Him, realizing our sin & need & need of a Savior, relying upon Him alone, turning from self & sin, committing your life to Him. I Thessalonians 1:9-10 The reality of judgment should drive us to pray for & witness to the unsaved. IV)There will be those have had some sort of “conversion experience” who are not redeemed & do not believe & will turn back to their unbelief - vs20-22. God knows those who are His (II Tim. 2:19) and preserves His own (Jude 24-25). But, there are those who profess Christ who are not in Christ. They may seem to have embraced Christ by faith & even “escaped the defilements of the world” for a time, but go back to them. Demas is an example - (Col. 4:14, Philemon 1:24), II Tim. 4:10 Phygelus & Hermongenes - II Timothy 1:15 I Timothy 4:1 Be warned! II Peter 1:10 Be concerned for loved ones & friends. Until He comes, let us take heart in God’s promises, which are many, and let us give heed to God’s warnings, which are also expressions of His love. Plays: 5898

Recommended book: The Bible
The Bible is a marvelous book - so much to gain.
Truth to live by, but also revelation of God Himself.
Facts and knowledge, but also promises of God.
2012 Theme: “Until He Comes” - looking for Jesus to come and living according to that perspective.

- But also, vital truths for our lives. 4 statements that warrant everyone’s attention.

II)They will not escape God’s judgment - vs1b, 3b-9.
God did not spare fallen angels - cast down from heaven, limited in what they can do, bound for judgment.
God did not spare the ancient world - destroyed by the flood.
God did not spare Sodom & Gomorrah, but destroyed by fire.
God’s judgment upon false prophets/teachers is just as sure.
III)Their character is flawed - vs10-19.
1)They indulge the lust of defiling passions (10)
2)They despise authority (10)
3)They are bold and willful (10-11)
4)They are ignorant of what they speak (12)
5)They are a dangerous & corrupting presence in the body of Christ (13)
6)Their hearts are set on the flesh (14)
7)Their hearts are set on greed (14)
8)They follow the way of Balaam (14-15) - Numbers 22-24
9)They are as useless as wells w/out water & clouds w/out rain (17-19) - promise what can’t deliver.
IV)They may appear to be redeemed, but are not and they will return to unbelief - we must know the truth & teach the truth. Know God thru faith in Christ, if you would have Him put your life/relationships together.
Submit to Him & His way. Study the Bible, get involved in a Bible study.
Pray yourself & together w/bros/sis in Christ the prayer of the Psalmist in Psalm 25:4-5.
Preview: 1)God knows how to rescue the godly from trials;
2)God keeps the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment;
3)Day of judgment is an undeniable reality;
4)There will be those have had some sort of “conversion experience” who are not redeemed & do not believe & will turn back to their unbelief.
Until He comes, let us hold fast to the truth of Scripture, being aware of false prophets and teachers, being taught by the Spirit of truth.

080512_Until He Comes_There Will Be False Prophets_2Peter 2:1-3Sermon Outline
“Until He Comes: There Will Be False Prophets!”- II Peter 2:1-3
“O Brother, Where Art Thou?” - “Everyone’s looking for answers.”
Because we looking for answers, we are susceptible to lies.
II Peter 1: Peter emphasized the importance of the knowledge (exact/true knowledge) of God and God’s Word.
He reminded them of the sureness of the prophetic word concerning Christ, even more sure than his own personal, eye-witness testimony (which was concrete).
He urged them to stick to the truth, because there would be false teachers espousing lies.
2012 Theme: “Until He Comes” - looking for Jesus to come and living according to that perspective.
Until He comes, there will be false prophets and false teachers!
II Peter 2:1-3
Vs1 - At the same time the prophets of old proclaimed the message of God, false prophets also arose, espousing lies.
False prophet - “pseudoprophetes” - “One who, acting the part of a divinely inspired prophet, utters falsehoods under the name of divine prophecies” (Strong’s).
Zedekiah (I Kings 22:1-28), Hananiah (Jeremiah 28) - Those who said, “Thus says the Lord” when the Lord didn’t speak.
(*Krystle, you don’t need to display these scripture passages)
Jesus warned against false prophets - Matthew 7:15-16; 24:11
Just as false prophets arose, false teachers would/will arise.
False teacher - pseudodidaskalos - one who claims to teach the truth, but teaches what is not true.
Secretly - a false teacher is not going to announce himself as such.
Destructive heresies - pointing away from the truth of who Christ is and what He has done.
Vs2 - False teachers will gather a following!
Sensuality - “unbridled lust, excess, licentiousness, outrageous- ness, shamelessness, insolence” (Strong’s). False teaching is like spiritual pornography leading to spiritual adultery!
Truth is slandered, blasphemed by false teaching.
Vs3 - Greed - desire to have more. False teachers want more following, attention, selfish gain.
False teachers exploit through lies.
False prophets/teachers do not and will not escape God’s wrath. He has condemned them even from long ago. Their destruction will be swift and sure (vs1).
There always have been and always will be false prophets/teachers, until Jesus comes again.
Some are obvious to most - “Free written prophecy,” Jim Jones, Harold Camping
Others more subtle - Some TV evangelists, those who claim to be Christian but preach another gospel
Others blatantly anti-Christ
Colossians 2:8
So what are we to do?
1)Beware - Be careful what you take in.
2)Know the truth - John 8:31-32 - Be willing to learn
3)Test the spirits - I John 4:1-6
4)Be filled with the Spirit of Truth - Ephesians 5:18
5)Pray for God’s protection - yourself, your loved ones, each other.
Until He comes, let us hold fast to the truth of Scripture, being aware of false prophets and teachers, being taught by the Spirit of truth.

072212_Until He Comes_Stick to the Truth“Until He Comes: Stick to the Truth!”- II Peter 1:16-21
The question Pontius Pilate asked Jesus is still being posed today: “What is truth?” The world’s answer: Truth is relative; your truth/my truth Jesus (John 14:6): “I am…the truth…” 2012 Theme: “Until He Comes” - looking for Jesus to come and living according to that perspective. Until He comes, stick to the truth! Peter’s concern: That we know and stand upon the truth. He has emphasized knowledge of God and of Jesus Christ (vs2, 3). He has reminded them of the truth of what God has done for them, of who they are in Christ and of their sure hope (vs3-11). He has reminded them that they are established in the truth (vs12). Now he urges them to stick to the truth, whether he is alive or not. II Peter 1:16-21 Vs16 - The Gospel that Peter preached and the Biblical record is no myth! He had been an eyewitness! Peter witnessed firsthand the power of Jesus Christ - “inherent power, residing in a person or thing by virtue of its nature, or which a person/thing exerts or puts forth” (Strong’s). “parousia” - “presence, coming, arrival, advent” (Strong’s) - Peter learned of Christ’s coming at His birth and personally heard (from Jesus Himself) the promise of Christ’s coming again. The 1st advent of Christ was divine intervention; so shall His 2nd advent be! Majesty - “megaleiotes” - “greatness, magnificence - of the visible splendor of the divine majesty…” Vs17-18 - Peter witnessed firsthand many miracles of Jesus - displays of His power and majesty, but none greater than the Transfiguration. Matthew 17:1-8 “Transfigured” - “metamorphoo” - “transformed” Gudzik - “The effect was extremely striking; Jesus became so bright in appearance that it was hard to look at Him. The shining glory was not a new miracle, but a ‘pause’ in an ongoing miracle. The real miracle was that Jesus, most of the time [in His humanity, wrapped in flesh] kept from displaying His glory.” Moses and Elijah represented the Law and the Prophets, held in most high regard by the Jews. Those words from God the Father were very important: Jesus needed the conformation of His Sonship and calling, and the encouragement of His Father’s pleasure in Him, for what He was about to endure on the cross. Jesus was raised to a higher level than the Law and Prophets. Peter heard this firsthand and didn’t make it up, like the false teaching that was beginning to infiltrate the Church. Vs19 - Even more sure than Peter’s experience was (and is!) the testimony of God’s word (the prophets) is surer still. Gudzik - “There are at least 322 distinct Old Testament predictions regarding the Messiah that Jesus fulfilled perfectly.” Professor Peter Stone: “Probability of one man fulfilling 8 of these prophecies - 1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000!” “48 prophecies fulfilled - 1 in 10 to the 157th power.” The sureness of prophecies about Jesus extends to all Scripture. We would do well to pay attention to the truth of Scripture - “a lamp shining in a dark place” “Day dawns” - the day of Christ’s coming “Morning Star” - Jesus - He has risen in our hearts now, by the presence of the Holy Spirit, who is a guarantee of eternity, when we will dwell with our Lord Jesus Christ forever, enjoying His majestic light. We are to hold fast to the truth we have been given, have heard and experienced until the promise of Christ’s coming is fulfilled. Vs20 - Important understanding: There is only one correct interpretation of Scripture. Let the hearer beware! Vs21 - All the prophecies of Scripture and all of Scripture came not from any man/men, but from God the Holy Spirit. “Carried along” - Like the wind moving a ship on the sea. We need the Holy Spirit to carry us along to a correct understanding of the truth of Scripture. He is the Spirit of truth. Until He comes, let us hold fast to the truth of Scripture, prayerfully studying the Bible and humbly living by the truth we have received, by the power and direction of the blessed Spirit of truth. 071512_Until He Comes_Add It Up And Be Sure“Until He Comes: Add It Up and Be Sure!”- II Peter 1:1-15
Do you ever struggle with assurance of salvation? Would you like to never struggle with assurance again? You can be sure. Know, grow, know. 2012 Theme: “Until He Comes” - looking for Jesus to come and living according to that perspective. Until He comes, add it up and be sure. II Peter 1:1-15 God’s intention for everyone of His children is to conform us to the image of His Son, Jesus Christ - Romans 8:29. As we saw last week, by His divine power, God has already given us who are in Christ all we need to successfully live the Christian life. He has provided the design, the materials and the expertise to build the “house” (Christian life), but He calls us to work with Him. We can’t live the Christian life in our own strength or grow ourselves spiritually - God must do it; but we can and must work/walk with God in the process. As we do, we gain assurance of our salvation! Verses 5-7 - Spiritual Addition “For this very reason” - Because God has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Christ and His precious and great promises, through which we become partakers of the divine nature. For this reason, add to your life the very elements of that divine nature - Christ-likeness. “Make every effort” - “interest one’s self most earnestly” (Strong’s). “Supplement” - “bring in besides, contribute besides to something” (Strong’s). You can’t add anything to your salvation, but you can add to your faith - because you believe, pursue these characteristics. “Virtue” - “moral goodness/excellence” (Strong’s). Study the life and teaching of Jesus. Matthew 5:21-22, 27-28, 43-44 “Knowledge” - “deeper, more perfect knowledge; growth in knowledge” (Strong’s). Not simply intellect, but experience. “Self-control” - “mastering desires and passions, especially sensual appetites; temperance” (Strong’s). “Steadfastness” - “constancy, endurance; not swerving from one’s deliberate purpose and loyalty to faith and piety, even in the greatest trials and sufferings” (Strong’s). “Godliness” - “reverence, respect, piety towards God” (Strong’s). “Brotherly affection” - “philadelphia” - “love of brothers or sisters, brethren in Christ, fellow man” (Strong’s). “Love” - “agape” - “affection, good will, love, benevolence” (Strong’s). Unselfish love, without regard for return. We can’t accomplish any of these ourselves, God must do it in us. But we must give attention to these and other Christ-like characteristics, prayerfully seeking God the Holy Spirit’s transforming work in our lives. Verse 8 - If we are growing in these Christ-like characteristics, we will be becoming what we’re supposed to be, and fruitful in our knowledge/experience of Christ (and fruitful for Him)! Verse 9 - If we are not growing spiritually, because we have not given attention to these qualities, then we have forgotten what God has done for us in Christ and what we‘ve taken hold of in Christ. We are spiritually near-sighted ingrates! Near-sighted Christians have no assurance (or false assurance)! If you aren’t growing more like Christ, you should question your salvation! Oswald Chambers: “Enchanted but unchanged.” “They take up the pose of religion, but they are not penitent…God not only requires us to have a right attitude to Him, He requires us to allow the truth to so react in us that we are actively related to Him.” Verse 10 - Calling and election are acts of God alone, but we can be sure of His calling and electing us by the pursuit of these (and other) Christ-like qualities. Verse11 - We can be absolutely assured of “an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,” not by any work of our own, but because we have a living, faith, which God has given us and which He enables us to live out. Verses 12-15 - We don’t know how much time we have. Isn’t it time to be sure of our own salvation? Isn’t it time to teach the truth to those under our care? Isn’t it time to live lives that will exhibit the truth we teach? Know Christ by faith - embrace Him, give way to Him. Grow - work with God to grow spiritually. Then you will Know with assurance that you are His forever. Until He comes, let us work together w/God to be who He calls us to be. Let us add Christ-likeness to our faith, being sure of His salvation and helping others to know Him too. Plays: 4906
070812_Until He Comes_Stand Together, Knowing Him_2Peter 1:1-11“Until He Comes: Stand Together, Knowing Him!”- II Peter 1:1-11
Imagine if someone would give you all the materials for a house: the concrete for the foundation, every piece of wood, every strand of wire, every accompanying fixture, everything to complete the house, even the land upon which to build it. Wouldn’t that be great! Imagine if that same someone was an architect and builder, and he volunteered to build the house for you, but requiring that you work with him. What a gift! In essence, that is what God has done and is doing for us in Christ. For those in Christ, who believe and receive Christ by faith, God has given us everything we need to live the Christian life. And, He has done and is doing the work in us, but He insists that we work with Him in our spiritual growth. 2012 Theme: “Until He Comes” - looking for Jesus to come and living according to that perspective. Until He comes, we must stand together, knowing the truth, embracing the truth, standing on the truth. II Peter 1:1-11 False teaching invading the Church when Peter wrote this epistle: Judaism - Faith in Christ was not enough; you had to keep the rituals of the Jewish law (circumcision, feasts, traditions). Gnosticism (thought to be superior knowledge) - Only the spiritual matters, not physical/material. Led to either asceticism or licentiousness. Denied that Jesus came in the flesh. Peter was concerned that we have precise and correct knowledge of God and of the formation of the Christian life. Vs. 3-4 - The Christian life itself is the work of God in us. Vs3 - Everyone in Christ has everything we need to live the Christian Life - Life = “living it up” (J. Vernon McGee), abundant life - living up to who we are in Christ. - Godliness - piety towards God, Christ-likeness. Ray Stedman: “All the necessities, both for handling life & for manifesting righteousness, or godliness in the world are ours. Everyone who has genuinely come to Jesus Christ, w/out exception, has all that it takes to handle all that life can throw at him.” “If you come to Christ, you have Him & if you have Him, you have all that God is ever going to give you. You have all power & all things that pertain to life & godliness thru the knowledge of Him.” This is the work of God - by His divine power. This is the gift of God - He has granted this to us who believe. This comes though the knowledge of Christ - embracing by faith who He is and what He has done. The Lord Jesus has called us to His own glory and excellence. Romans 8:29-30 - a sure thing! Vs4 - By His glory and excellence, He has given to us precious and great promises: New and eternal life - II Cor. 5:17, John 3:16 The Holy Spirit within - John 14:16-17 Sanctification - Philippians 1:6, 2:12-13 And many more! Through these promises we who believe become partakers of the divine nature - Sons and daughters of God; Grow in Christ-likeness, Being made like Him. Through the knowledge of Christ we escape the corruption of sinful desire - delivered from the power of sin, set free in Christ, enabled to live for God. Vs5-7 (next week) - knowing what we know and having what we have in Christ, we can walk/work with God in the process of sanctification. Until He comes, let us stand together on the truth of what God has done for us in Christ, what we have in Christ, and who we are in Christ. Let us work together w/God to be who He called us to be. Rom 3:23-24 (ESV) 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus

Ravi Zacharias said in a pod cast – When I love you and you refuse to love me I hurt because I have lost something. When God loves you and you refuse to love God he hurts too. God hurts not because he has lost something, but because you have lost something. That is the purity of his love and the value he places on you.
God did not hurt because He had lost something
- He hurt because we had lost something
- And God wanted to give us back
- What we had lost.
- Which was Himself
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brennan manning quoting from C.K. Chesterton’s
- book “Tremendous trifles”.
- Calls the grace of God – The furious Love of God.
(Brennan Manning, The ragamuffin Gospel pg. 20)
Php 3:8 (ESV) Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ
“3 yrs out of the marine corps – 1st day at seminary – a beautiful man told me, “Kid, you will not understand this now, but the day you experience the love in the heart of Jesus Christ – nothing else in the world will ever again seem that beautiful or desirable.”
(Brennan Manning – The reality of our Christian existence – Youtube)
1 John 4:16-17 (NLT) 16…God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them. 17And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect…
Do you know that God loves you - just as you are?
Do you know that God likes you – Just as you are?
- God is not waiting to Love you
o When you get to where you should be
o Because if He was waiting
o To love you or me
o When we get to where we should be
o He will never love us - in the here and now.
o Because we will never be - who we should be
o Until Jesus comes back
------------------------------------------------------------------
For Christ did not die to make people
- That will have good morals
- And now make positive right choices
Jesus Christ died on Calvary
- So we will finally once again
- Not hide from Him who is Love
- Look full in His wonderful face
- And let Him reveal His Glory
- Through the sin filled flesh
- Of a person
- That He is madly in Love with.
- All by the furious Love of God.
- That we call the Grace of God
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Grace is the active expression of his love. The Christian lives by grace as Abba’s child, utterly rejecting the God who catches people by surprise in a moment of weakness—the God incapable of smiling at our awkward mistakes, the God who does not accept a seat at our human festivities, the God who says “You will pay for that,” the God incapable of understanding that children will always get dirty and be forgetful, the God always snooping around after sinners.”
(Brennan Manning, The Ragamuffin Gospel Pg.38-39)
To know Christ - was Life for Paul.
Because nothing else would ever be
- as beautiful or desirable
- As knowing Christ more
- Than he did yesterday.
Robert Farrar Capon in the book - Between Noon and Three: Romance, Law, and the Outrage of Grace. Wrote this:
“The Reformation was a time when men went blind, staggering drunk because they had discovered, in the dusty basement of late medievalism, a whole cellarful of 1500 year-old, 200 proof grace - of bottle after bottle of pure distillate of Scripture, one sip of which would convince anyone that God saves us single-handedly. The word of the gospel-after all those centuries of trying to lift yourself into heaven by worrying about the perfection of your bootstraps-suddenly turned out to be a flat announcement that the saved were home before they started…Grace has to be drunk straight: no water, no ice, and certainly no ginger ale; neither goodness, nor badness, nor flowers that bloom in the spring of super spirituality could be allowed to enter into the case.”
(Robert Farrar Capon in the book - Between Noon and Three: Romance, Law, and the Outrage of Grace pg. 114-115)

When Love sees you – by: Third day
Here are some of the verses
Tell me your story, show me your wounds
And I'll show you what Love sees when Love looks at you
Hand me the pieces, broken and bruised
And I'll show you what Love sees when Love sees you
I see what I made in your mother's womb
I see the day I fell in love with you.
I see your tomorrows, nothing left to chance
I see My Father's fingerprints
I see your story, I see My name
Written on every beautiful page
You see the struggle, you see the shame
I see the reason I came
I came for your story, I came for your wounds
To show you what Love sees when I see you
