Fully Devoted, Fully Engaged Christ-Followers: The Christ-follower and the Word of God ~ James 1:19-27, by Pastor Bruce Burks Notes: "Antiques Road Show," "Junkyard Wars" - valuable items stumbled upon. What is your "MVP" - Most Valuable Possession? Home? Diamond ring? Portfolio? Maybe something you haven't considered. Consider the Bible - God's holy Word! Psalm 19:7-11 James 1:19-27 - The Christ-follower and the Word of God. I)The Value of the Word of God - By it God saves us. A)Vs18 - God chose to bring us forth to life in Christ "by the word of truth," the gospel preached to us - Romans 1:16. B)Vs21 - We are saved eternally, but also daily by the Word of God. - "save" - "sozo" - "keep safe and sound, rescue from danger or destruction" (Strong's). - Much of the wisdom God gives us is through the Word. - The principles of Scripture protect and guide us. - Psalm 119:9, 11, 105 II)The Christ-follower's Relationship to the Word of God. A)Must hear the Word - Vs19. We hear the word by reading, studying, being taught. - 2 ears, 1 mouth! Listen twice as much as you speak! Listen to the Word of God. - Trials bring temptation to react wrongly - say what we can't get back, do out of anger what we wish we hadn't. - Our angry reactions supplant God's purposes (to produce endurance, prove our faith, make us more like Christ). B)Must receive the Word - Vs21. We receive the word by assenting to and embracing it. - "receive" (humbly accept) - "dechomai" - "take with the hand, take hold, take up, grant access to, receive favorably, give ear to, embrace, make one's own, take upon one's self..." (Strong's) - "planted" - "emphytos" - "implanted, rooted, engrafted - a word whose property it is to root itself like a seed in the heart" (Vine's). - Repentance (getting rid of) must coincide with receiving the Word. C)Must be doers of the Word (or hearing is for nothing) - Vs22. - "doer" - "poietes" - "maker, producer, performer; one who obeys or fulfills the law" (Strong's). - "deceive" - "paralogizomai" - "reckon wrong, miscount, cheat by false reckoning, deceive by false reasoning, delude, circumvent" (Strong's). Why would we want to do this to ourselves? - We may say we believe in Christ and God's Word, but are we disciples? Do we follow what we beleive (Which is James' argument in chapter 2)? Fully Devoted, Fully Engaged Christ-Followers value the Word of God, hear the Word of God, receive the Word of God, and do what the Word of God says!
